VocabularySpellingCity is Available Discounted thru T4L back office!
VocabularySpellingCity usually costs families $30 per year for up to five kids but it's discounted if you buy it through the Time4Learning parent login.
I'd like to share a little info on why homeschoolers use VocabularySpellingCity.
The VocabSpellingCity service, both a website and app, is best known for providing a FREE automated spelling test for any list of words. For any set of words, they have a ready to go library of context rich sentences spoken by a human. This was created as a sort of student empowerment idea since kids can't test themselves on their spelling and it has game-like features reflecting the founder's background as a game developer for the Playstation.
But there's A LOT more ways it can build literacy skills witht he premium membership plus it really simplifies parents' lives. For instance, the grading of tests is automatic, the record keeping for portfolios is detailed and automatic, assigning practice on lists takes one click, and generating lists for review from previous mistakes is also just one click.
Here's a list of the types of skills it builds going from help for the younger (ie Kindergarten level) to the more advanced (plenty of high schoolers use it). If you win, this premium membership is free to you for a year. Otherwise, it costs $30 for a family with up to 5 kids.
VocabularySpellingCity allows students to practice basic skills like handwriting by printing out word lists with those guidelines and traceable letters. If you are a lefty, you can even print them out right justified which is a really nice touch. There are also great activities for practicing putting words (or just letters) in alphabetical order. It's so much better on a computer than with paper and pencil.
Another basic literacy skill is recognizing the distinct sounds n words. This sound recognition is phonological skill and in includes recognizing sounds and syllables. They have activities to do with with any word list. These same activities include practice with recognizing sound letter correspondence, phonics!
There are about a dozen spelling games on VocabularySpelligCity and another dozen activities that build vocabulary skills. The key for students to master words is to have them work with the same words over several weeks for spaced practice which is key to retention.
Many parents over look the feature that allows students to enter and save their own word list on VocabularySpellingCity. So you can ask your student to pick ten words from each chapter in a book which he/she thinks are interesting or new.
Lastly, one of my favorite features, are the activities where the student is asked to write a sentence or paragraph to show that they now how to use their new words.
