Kindness Goes A Long Way...
by Jamie

BUSY... BUSY... Homeschooling, Field Trips, Co-op meetings, sports events, church activities, doctor's appointments, work schedules... the list goes on and on. We are so busy. In fact, the average American works longer than they have ever worked before. According to statistics... Americans are working longer hours and are busy with more activities and responsibilities than at any other time since statistics started being kept!

With all this busy - ness people are lonely. Yes, there's tons to do... but no time in which people can find and cultivate friendships. This makes for an even more remarkably sad statistic. That compounded with the stress of working hard, meeting expected schedules... people can't combat the effects of stress and anxiety. Taking time to make a friend, or cultivate an existing friendship is a key factor in alleviating the effects of stress. In a simpler time, people would meet their neighbors and befriend them, share tools and even a cup of sugar now and then. When families fell on hard times, neighbors often lent a hand. Today many Americans live for years without knowing more than the names of their neighbors.

While, most of us are just trying to "pay the bills" and "raise the kids", it's important to remember that kindness can really make a difference in someone's life. Investing in others, and allowing others to invest in you can give you an outlet that no work or busy schedule ever could. Even homeschooling mothers like us can be so lonely. Surrounded by people... I can find myself craving the input of other mothers who are experiencing the same life situations. If you haven't found someone to "connect" with lately... check out our parent forum! There are lots of great moms there who are feeling just like you and me!

If you really want to cut back on your busy schedule to simplify your life... try reviewing your schedule to find areas that you really don't "have to" be involved in. Cut those commitments first, and replace them with spending quality time with someone you care about. You could even take a minute to say "Hello" to your neighbor!
