This is going to be a heavy post, just warning you. This past week, one of my kids' friends shared with me that she cuts herself. We will call this teen "Beth" to protect her identity. Since she told me, my heart has been breaking for Beth. I can't help but think of how many teens there are out there who feel that this is the only way they have to deal with the overwhelming emotions they have.

I asked Beth, if cutting really makes her feel any better. Her answer was that she would rather feel real pain than the emotional pain. I know that Beth is getting help. She has a couple of therapists that she sees so I was willing to agree not to tell her parents. This child needs my support and love right now. I am really hoping that her therapist will share this with her parents though.

This is not something that we like to think about or that we want to believe that our kids might be doing. But, sadly, homeschool kids are not exempt from this kind of thing.

What are some signs that might reveal that a teen is cutting?
  • Do they insist on wearing long shirts no matter what the weather?
  • Do they seem distant and secretive?
  • Do they have a history of depression?
  • Are there unexplained cuts or scars on their arms, legs or chest?

It's also important to keep in mind that although it tends to be mostly girls who do this, boys are known to do it as well. So what can we do to help once we realize that someone we know is doing this?
  • I would recommend first, if it is in your power, find a professional to help this teen. If it is not, then I would recommend telling their parents so that they can get them the help they need. (I would have done this with Beth, if I didn't know that she is already seeing a therapist.)
  • Let them know that you accept them and that they don't have to go through these emotions alone.
  • Don't make them feel like they are doing something wrong by cutting. That will only lead to feelings of shame and more cutting. Besides, they already know that it is wrong. (I'm afraid that I messed up with this one!)

The bottom line is that these kids are usually hurting from some really deep emotional hurts. They need love, support and professional help.

WOW That is very eye opening. Being a homeschooler and not in the main stream I don't think about that. Thanks for the very informative blog.

I am glad to know I'm not alone with a child that cuts theirselves. She has stopped for now but she has been refusing to go to school an now we are gonna try homeschooling. The signs of cutting is definately long sleeves in hot weather or long pants instead of shorts.

Sadly, it is more common than we like to think. I'm glad that your daughter is getting help! I think homeschooling will be an excellent option for her! Hang in there, mom!!! You are doing a great job!!
