Default Teaching your child a second language

    Hi,

I know that some families try to teach their child to focus on mostly English in the belief that doing so will make their child 100% Canadian or American more so than if they knew another language.

I've talked to just a few people who believe that this will increase their child's level of social success later on...

Personally, I consider the more languages the better.

What are your thoughts on this?

    Hi,

I'm an education major who will graduate next year with a bachelor's in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Although the linqua franca is English, it helps a child to learn a second language. I would have started earlier with my now 15-year-old, but he had an articulation disorder, and it was crucial to focus on English.

I recently resumed studying French, and he wants to learn also, so we're studying together.

Bi- and multi-lingualism opens up many opportunities and ways of seeing and experiencing the world.
