    Default High School Homeschooler

Does anyone know if it is required to have the homeschooling done by the parents. My son will be a senior (if he passes summer school) and goes to a tech school. He struggles with ADHD and refuses to take medication because he thinks it is making him crazy and he feels very withdrawn taking it. We did get him on a 504 plan but the school has not been helpful at all in partnering with us to make him successful. I don't think he will be successful in his senior year because he can't change teachers because of the shop aspect. I'm thinking that if we could hire someone to homeschool him it may be worth it vs. him quitting school when he turns 18 in November although at this point a GED may be the only option. Thoughts?

Hi there. I'm so sorry you are struggling with this...unfortunately, I don't have a high schooler yet, so I have no personal experience/advice to share. I did check these Massachusetts homeschool laws and I didn't see anything saying that you couldn't hire someone. It would probably boil down to the approval of your school board. You may need to check with them and see if they can help answer that for you.

I'm sorry I wasn't more help, but I do wish you luck!

Hello, I just started homeschooling my 9th Grader as she has an IEP and did well with lots of tutoring and help and retaking tests. My daughter has ADHD and Learning difficulties and does not understand audio directions and all. I tried to get help at the HS and they are so focused on College Prep and she was in 3 Strong College Prep courses and the Special Ed Department and Coordinator was so slow in working with the children and had not even met with the kids at all. The reviews on greatschools.net were not good and we tried to move out of this town... we are still hoping to move. Anyways, I was so frustrated with the lack of help and communication and it took a long time to find out even who were Special Ed Liason was, that I finally withdrew her from school and signed her up for online High School for $48/mo with Pennfoster.edu where she can get her diploma through them. There are other options out there for you online schools. I found this one at Pennfoster to be the most reasonable, including books, ebooks, materials are included. Some other ones you have to buy the books separate. I hope this helps. Public School is not for everyone. You could write a letter demanding him to be tested further so that he can get Special Ed services with an IEP that way, they are forced to help him, although public schools do not like to do the testing. You have the right to get him on an IEP however. My daughter was on a 504 Plan for about a year and I demanded that she have further testing for Learning Differences and ADD...She finished Middle School with an IEP, with much support and help from the teachers, but the HS has dropped the ball and they expect kids to be independent and unfortunately this school system caters to the geniuses... with much prayer and agony, we are trying this online education until we find a better town that supports Special Ed services better. Good luck!
