    Curious.... What does the ILA designation stand for?

    Integrated Language Arts. Instead of focusing on just one skill, the ILA lessons integrate all of the various language arts skills: vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and so on.

    Most of them are based on a book or other piece of literature. The student may, for example, answer some questions about what he has read (comprehension). Then, he'll study some of the words in the story (vocabulary). He may also write about what he has read (writing skills). Other language arts skills are addresses, also.

    It's an effective way of learning, because the student has a point of reference for each skill: The book he has read. For instance, a student is more likely to remember the meaning of words he has encountered while reading an enjoyable story than a random list of "Vocabulary Words".
