Default Purchase Math only, English only, etc.

I love the idea of this curriculum! I really think my kids would love it also. The problem is, I also love our other curriculum choices - except for Math. I would love to use this site for Math only, but I know the option isn't available yet.

I've actually talked with others about this curriculum already because I think it looks great. Many of the other moms said they too would use it just for the L.A. or just for the Math if they could pay by the subject. They just can't seem to pay the full price per month for only one subject.

This would be a great opportunity for the eclectic moms out there. I know I use WinterPromise, Galloping the Globe, Power-Glide, and Reason for Handwriting. I was looking at Horizons Math ($65 per year), but then I saw this! I like this better, but Iwould prefer to pay $10 per month for Math only. Now I'm going to have to go with Horizons, but I feel like I lost a jewel.

Welcome to the Time4Learning forum TracieM!

I love this curriculum too! I know that a few other people have used Saxon or other math programs with T4L. I think that the monthly price for all 4 subjects is a remarkable value for our family. I haven't found anything more affordable while still being effective.
    Have you been to http://www.homeschoolmath.net/reviews/
They list reviews for math curriculum.

I have never heard of Reason for Handwriting. Is it anything like Starfall's manuscript books or Handwriting without Tears?

    Hi-
I agree that the price is excellent for all 4 subject together! I think it would be a great tool for any family with different age groups of kids also. My only problem is that it is a little steep in price for us because we only need Math. I know the other subjects could be great supplements to our other curriculum, even if we only used the Math for our core, but we just can't afford this plus our other materials. Maybe they'll be able to give a choice of subject only or whole curriculum later. That would be great.

I did go ahead and mention this program on a couple of my other forums, like ahomeforhomeschoolers.com & winterpromise.com Maybe I can at least get the word out right now, even if I can't swing it yet.

A Reason for Handwriting uses 1 worksheet per day for practice, and then on the 5th day, you get to choose from pretty bordered paper (which the kids color) in the back to write their verses on. They can then frame this and give to grandparents, nursing home clients, shut-ins, etc. each week. I'm using K & 3rd grade cursive.

One question I'm wondering - have you heard of anyone using this as their core curriculum last year who had really successful testing scores. The scores are pretty important in my state.

    Thanks,
    Tracie

    Default scores

I know how it can vary state-to-state Tracie, but in NC, the laws are a little more rigid about reporting and test scores. When you visit the website for Home School Legal Defense Association, it gives information on the laws for your state. My husband and I looked up the laws for NC a while back, as we had considered moving there.

Yes, there have been parents with high testing scores; we wrote a testimonial on my son's scores being high after the program. What's in your child's favor is that you can view the reports and see how well they are coming along. Also, you can always repeat certain lessons to re-inforce the material before they take the test.

    Hope that helps some

    Hi

We have looked at number at times at having a variety of options and pricing strategies.

As the creator of Time4Learning, let me frank about the problem.

At $19.95, we have to run a very tight ship so that we come out with positive cash flow. From that $19.95, we need to pay Compass a huge chunk for the license, the credit card company, our own staff etc etc. About 17% of the people who sign up, cancel in the first two weeks and take their money back. OUr costs for them are:

    - one month of a compass license
    - credit card fees on the signup
    - credit card fees on the refund
    - labor fees to answer of their questions
    - labor fees to process the registration
    - labor fees to process the cancellation

While there is a case for us charging different fees depending on grade levels and which subjects, it becomes complicated enough so that between the programming, answering the resulting questions, managing the changes etc, it looks like we could not be viable.

Our major commitment is to provide a huge value at a reasonable price that nearly everyone can afford. Alas, this means that we just cannot do half licenses for one subject, especially since Compass will not license to us that way.

Feel free to share the license between two children (but they cannot be on the system at the same time). We can accomodate having one child at 1st grade math, the other at 3rd (we cannot mix upper and lower school since that would cost us another compass license.).

Frankly, I feel a little bad about it since it seems like a reasonable thing to ask for but from our side, I just can't see how to do it.

actually Tracie, the SCORES aren't important in NC, only the taking of the tests, you don't even have to LOOK at the scores, and you can give your kids the test for ANY grade you want. They only care THAT you test them.
