Time4Learning provides automated integrated learning, student paced, for four subjects on a monthly basis. Time4Learning teaches many aspects of language arts including many areas that help with writing such as grammar, punctuation, word choice, and vocabulary. There is also writing practice with writing prompts using the Time4Learning writing software(Odyssey Writer) which focuses on teaching the writing process (Planning, Writing, Revising, Proofreading). But, the grading and feedback on the writing is left to the parents who are helped by being given grading rubriques (eg criteria).

Time4Writing is organized as a set of eight week writing classes. There are different courses for elementary, middle school, and high school students. While there are some exercises, the focus of the course is on writing by the student which is graded by a teacher who gives personalized feedback.

What's new at Time4Writing? There is a new tutorial for elementary school just started: Grammar Rocks

Can you describe how it works? The courses are taught as tutorials meaning that each student has a single teacher over the eight weeks. Each week, there is a new subject to student. Each student has some readings or other lessons, some automated lessons (not that different than Time4Learning), and a writing assignment. The teacher reviews the results on the exercises and gives feedback on the writing assignment. There are courses at high, middle, and elementary school level. All courses take eight weeks. There are beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses for each level.

One of the most popular course is Middle School Mechanics. The eight units/weeks are:

Unit 1 – The Sentence, The Fragment, and The Run-on
By the end of the first unit, the students will be able to differentiate between complete, fragement and run on sentences and use this knowledge to write their own proper sentences.
Unit 2 – Nouns, Nouns, and More Nouns!
By the end of the second unit, the students will be able to form the plural and possessive forms of nouns.
    Unit 3 – Subjects of a Sentence
By the end of the third unit, the students will be able to identify and use the simple and complete subjects of a sentence.
    Unit 4 – Predicates of a Sentence
By the end of the fourth unit, the students will be able to identify the simple and complete predicates of a sentence.
Unit 5 – Subject – Verb Agreement in a Sentence
By the end of the fifth unit, the students will be able to make common subjects and verbs agree.
Unit 6 – “Tricky” Subject – Verb Agreement
By the end of the sixth unit, the students will be able to make tricky subjects and verbs agree.
    Unit 7 – Capitalization
By the end of the seventh unit, the students will be able to correctly capitalize words both individually and within sentences.
Unit 8 – Sum it ALL UP!
By the end of the eighth unit, the students will be able to demonstrate mastery of writing proper sentences, making subjects and verbs agree, and using correct capitalization rules. The students will also proofread their own writing to check for and correct any errors in these areas.
