How did you come to home-schooling?

As for us, my son was having some problems in school but he was doing ok, and working hard, but had fallen a little behind, nothing that couldn't still be fixed at the time, and he was a positive little boy. His teacher suggested that we just for half a year or so, put him in the special class, just to help him out. We wanted to do what's best for him, so we agreed, only for half a year or so. When the new year started and he was in that class, I saw the changes in him virtually immediately, he was no longer positive, he was saying things like he wasn't going to ever get anywhere, so why should he try. I got it out of him later that his teacher in this class was telling him that he is stupid and that he would never amount to anything. I tried talking to the principle about it, who wouldn't hear any of it, and insisted that she is one of the best teachers they have. I would help my son with his homework, and know it is correct, she would mark everything wrong, and fail him. Finally after a year and a half and refusing to pay the school-fees, the principle agreed to seeing me again. I insisted that my child be removed from the class, at which point he promptly informed me I can't and they can't because I had agreed that he stays in the class permanently and produced a small photocopied note which I apparently had signed. Problem was, it wasn't my signature and I had never seen that note before. What made the problem even worse was that they had given that note to the department of education, whom accepted it, so even if moved my child to another school, they would automatically put him back in the special class. I was watching my son become more and more despondent and negative, and slipping further and further behind and felt there was nothing I could do about it.

When we moved to another city, I spoke to my husband and we decided to go with homeschooling. That's how we got where we are today. With my daughter, when we discovered just how positive homeschooling was, we decided to go with homeschooling with her as well. My son is slowly getting out of that frame of mind, believing that he is useless and stupid. The simple fact that one teacher can undermine years since the day that he was born of positive work for him to believe in himself, in just a couple of months, and then receive no help from the department of education, not even to listen to you, was just unbelievable. I feel sorry for the other kids in her class, my son told me, it wasn't just him she was saying those things to.

But we are all happy now, and it finally feels like we are managing to undo her work, and I must admit, T4L has made it so much easier, because the lessons are done in such a way, that my son can catch up, understand and learn, have a excellent quiz, and so he slowly starts believing in himself again. As we all know, mom and dad, can tell you until they are blue in the face that you are not stupid, it's something you need to start believing yourself, inside yourself, and that's where T4L is making such a huge difference. Thank you T4L
